Practice

Set yourself up for success.

Lay out a towel on your work surface and start practicing with the tile nippers. With any new tool it takes practice to become used to how the tool works.

Cement

Tile Application.

All the tile will need to be cemented to the backer-board. The process can be all at once, one tile at a time (back butter), or a combination of the two. Use the method that works the best for your design and the type of workspace you have available. You may have space to work over a number of days and can wait to cement all at once. Or you may need to put the project away after working for a bit, if this is the case, you might decide to mix a little bit of cement, and back butter as you go. There is not a right way or a wrong way, just practice a method that works best for your project, workspace, and time.

Mixing cement is a critical step in the mosaic tile process.

Cementing all at once is option A for adhering tile to backer board.

Back buttering each tile is option B for tile adhearing.

Finishing

Grout + Polish.

Adding grout brings it all together. The grout fills in all the gaps and helps your project look professional. Make sure you have enough time to mix, apply and polish all in one session, polishing makes the project look neat and complete.
